Dear Parents, Students and Staff,

Welcome to the last newsletter for Term!

Last week, we met for the first time with the company and project managers of F.A.L. who have been appointed to construct our new complex.  This start up meeting was the first of many team discussions that will be held over the coming year and through which we will be able to add a significant number of permanent learning and performance spaces to our existing facilities.  These additions are desperately needed and we are very excited that works will commence in the school holidays.

Everyone will need to be mindful of the changes to the landscape that will affect the bus turning key, staff and visitor car parking and general movements around the heart of the school.  We have been planning carefully to minimise the inconvenience but altered procedures and environments are an unavoidable part of a major building programme. We will keep you posted on what is happening through both the newsletter and our School Stream app but the first change you will see will be the removal of the demountable classrooms at the top of the turning circle and...

House Fire - urgent request for donations

I write to let you know that the family who lost everything in a house fire on Easter Saturday was one of St Madeleine's families. The Zendehdel family have a child in Year One and were alerted to the devastating news that a fire had destroyed their home in Kenthurst.
Since then, Jeanette Black (principal of St Madeleine's Primary) has provided direct assistance to the family and coordinated other community efforts including the establishment of a Go Fund Me page to raise desperately needed money to try to replace some of what has been lost.
I have told Jeanette that we will promote this page to the Marian community who always surpass expectations of generosity towards those in need of our help.
If you would like to donate to the account, please follow the link below.
Please keep the Zendehdel family in your prayers as they come to terms with the shock and devastation of their loss.

Kind regards,
Jayne Campbell

Gratitude connects you to things outside of yourself, such as others and nature. Describe times you have used gratitude to connect with things outside of yourself.

A balanced student lifestyle places an equal emphasis on all of their elements of wellbeing - they work together to build the student’s wellbeing. To ignore any of these, adversely affects the others. This is particularly so if the Skills and Achievement element is pushed too hard and the Exercise and Health element is not also focused on. Our young people are becoming increasing obese with the onset of diabetes occurring earlier. Active and positive people are more likely to achieve what they set out to do and are healthier.

All students’ Personal Timetables should include...

A much needed wake-up call

On Tuesday night I attended a screening of Blue, The Day the Sea Changed at Loreto Normanhurst. The evening was hosted by the Loreto Green Team and students from many schools attended. This documentary film was written and directed by Karina Holden, and it exposed the hidden crisis facing our oceans. It was a real wake-up call for all of us there, as the film highlighted so many seemingly impossible challenges facing our oceans: endemic over-fishing, shocking stockpiles of plastics, thousands of abandoned ‘ghost’ nets which are causing havoc with sealife, coral bleaching and the list goes on.

Perhaps the most alarming expose of the night was the damage being done by microplastic particles which are found in washing powders, cosmetics, clothing etc. These particles are being ingested by many marine organisms, right down to the plankton, with devastating effects. The film also highlighted the plight of many marine birds, and confronting images were shown of plastic products that have been ingested by birds and other marine life.

Take 3 Campaign

So what is the solution? One thing I took away from the evening was a determination to drastically reduce the amount of plastic I use. Take 3 for the sea  www.take3.org  is a great organisation that encourages us all to pick up 3 pieces of plastic every time we go to the beach. Ironically, I had been walking along the beach the weekend before and didn’t notice any plastic on my southbound stroll, but when I walked back up the beach and deliberately looked for plastic, I couldn’t believe my eyes!! Let’s all become more aware of how much plastic we use, and try to commit to reduce plastic wherever we can.

Year 10 Mental Health Forum

On Friday 6 April, Year 10 had the fantastic opportunity to learn more about mental health.

The two speakers, Leanne Hall and Peter Casbolt broadened our knowledge about how to deal with stress, anxiety and depression.

We also learnt about how to recognise some of those symptoms and how to help friends and family who may be dealing with some of these.

It was a great talk that educated us further on how to cope with stress with exams and provided insight about how our fears affect our action.

We’d like to thank the guest speakers and members of the Dural Rotary Club for organising this event to discuss mental health.

iParent - Screen Smart Tour

Whether you're a parent, carer, aunt, uncle or grandparent it can be a difficult task keeping up with young people and technology or even knowing when and how to start the conversation about online safety in your household.

Meet  Screen Smart Parent Tour — our new interactive self-reflective tool that helps parents and carers of pre and young teens keep on track with online safety.

The virtual tour takes you through six important online topics including social media, screen time, personal information, inappropriate content, cyberbullying and contact with strangers. Each topic offers practical tips and advice on how to allow children to explore safely and manage online issues if they arise.
